Announcing Kelly Sheridan as a Guest of Honour at UK PonyCon 2020

We’re extremely pleased to announce Kelly Sheridan as a Guest of Honour at UK PonyCon 2020.

Kelly Sheridan is delighted to play Starlight Glimmer, Sassy Saddles, Misty Fly and others in MLP: FiM. With more than 25 years of voice over experience, she has appeared in numerous animated series and features including Ukyo in Ranma ½, Sango in Inuyasha, and numerous roles in My Little Pony Tales and MLP G3.  Most notably, she worked for Mattel for over a decade, playing the voice of Barbie in the majority of their feature length films. Recent credits include Blayde in Dinotrux, Praxina in Lolirock, various roles in Seth Rogan’s Sausage Party, and the upcoming preschool series 16 Hudson.

Kelly is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s Theatre Program and loves creating theatre. The rest of the time she can be found traveling, playing ridiculously complicated board games and sampling premium tequilas.

Kelly will be taking part in events and holding signing sessions at this year’s convention. Please watch out for future announcements for more information about when and where you’ll see her.

UK PonyCon returns to Nottingham in October 2020

UK PonyCon 2020 returns to Nottingham on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th October for another weekend of pony fun.

We had such a great time at Nottingham Trent University’s City Campus over the past two years that we’re extremely happy to say that we’ll be back again later this year. We love the big open spaces, ease of access and supportive staff. You told us in the post-event survey that having a variety of accommodation options nearby, excellent transport links, plenty of side rooms for activities and a cafe or bar on-site were the most important things about our choice of venue, and we’ve found it difficult to find another venue that ticks these boxes as well as Nottingham while keeping ticket prices affordable.

This year’s UK PonyCon falls on a special weekend in history, as it marks ten years since My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic first aired on television on 10th October 2010. We hope that you’ll join us in celebrating our favourite pastel ponies and all of the adventures they have been on, and you can expect panels at the event where you’ll learn all about the history of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the generations that came before.

The theme for UK PonyCon 2020 was announced in the closing ceremony of 2019’s event as “Spooky Con”, which will be our first Halloween themed convention despite having been held around that time for many years.

Over the coming weeks and months you can expect to hear more from us concerning ticket sales, stallholder applications, contributor applications, merchandise pre-orders and much more. In the meantime, please make sure you’re following us on social media so that you receive all of the updates.

We’re opening up the UK PonyCon online store for a limited period to sell t-shirts, lanyards, badges, postcards, mugs and all sorts of other lovely merchandise. Included in the store are items from our 2017, 2018 and 2019 conventions.

Hearth’s Warming Competition update

Back in November 2019, we asked people to create a creative piece using the prompt “Britannia spreading Hearth’s Warming cheer!” in one of three different ways:

  • Artwork (two categories: children up to the age of 12, and adults)
  • Photography
  • Writing a short fan fiction, drabble or poem (no more than 500 words)

Sadly we didn’t receive any written entries, however we’re blown away by all of these amazing entries! See them all over on our Facebook page here (no Facebook account required to view).

As we’ve been a little late in administering the competition, rather than selecting winners, we’ll include all entries on a page in the UK PonyCon 2020 con book.

Recruiting events assistants

We’re looking for events assistants to join our team. Could that be you?

Events assistants help with all of the lovely events on our schedule. From the panels and presentations to the crafts and music events, these are the people who make them all happen.

We have openings for specialised Events Assistant positions, where you’ll focus on particular types of events:

  • Children’s and Crafts Event Assistant
  • Karaoke and Games Events Assistant
  • Contributor Support Events Assistant
  • Music Events Assistant

If you’re not sure which one to apply for or are interested in multiple, we’re also accepting general applications – just let us know your preferences if you have any.

Please remember that these are unpaid volunteer roles and the minimum age to apply is 18 years old.

At this time we’re saying goodbye to Guiding Breeze, who has officially served as treasurer for the past three years, however unofficially has worn many other hats including accessibility lead, merchandise lead, social media assistant, stalls lead, ticket sales lead and website assistant. We’re very grateful for all of her contributions over the years and wish her the best of luck for her future endeavours with all of the spare time she’s getting back!

Now accepting applications for Marketing Lead committee position

Preparations for UK PonyCon 2020 are underway, and as part of this we review the team who will make it happen.

We have one new opening on the committee this year. Whilst we have a number of committee members changing roles (which we will announce once the role below has been filed) we have an opening for what we are now branding our Marketing Role.

Applications for the position are now open and will close at 7pm on Friday the 27th December 2019. Find out more about the role and how to apply below.

This role not for you but still want to help? There will be plenty more volunteering opportunities throughout the year and at the convention, so keep your eye out for these once we announce further details of UK PonyCon 2020.

Marketing Lead

As Marketing Lead, you will be responsible for marketing UK PonyCon, managing our online presence and responding to enquiries through multiple online channels. This is a rebranding of the previous role of “communications lead” as we are looking for somebody to proactively assist with the ongoing promotion of the convention and community engagement.

You will manage our social media profiles and online presence, particularly our Facebook page, Facebook group, Twitter, YouTube, website and email newsletter. You will work with other members of the team, particularly the Chairperson, Events Lead, Treasurer and Arts Lead, to plan and write content to communicate important news, maintain and grow interest in the event, and reply to queries from the public received through these channels.

You will research advertising opportunities to help more people discover our event. At times this will involve discussion with media outlets on a national and local level, press organisations within the My Little Pony community and events similar to ours worldwide.

You will organise the annual post-event feedback survey(s) and analyse the results. You may be called upon to review results of past surveys to inform decisions for the next event.

You will report to the Chairperson and may have volunteers reporting to you, such as marketing assistants and photographers. You will be involved at all stages of the convention: during the planning, at the convention and afterwards.

Past experience managing social media profiles for organisations or in a public-facing role would be highly advantageous although not mandatory.

This role will require frequent online access to our social media, as well as checking in to the forum and discussion groups to take part in discussions for planning the event.

All applicants must be over 18 years of age at the time of making the application and have no unspent criminal convictions (excluding traffic offences). Applicants must have attended at least one UK PonyCon and prior experience of volunteering at the convention is a bonus.

All roles are volunteer roles and unpaid. Please also refer to our Volunteer Agreement for what we expect of you and what you can expect of us.

Please do not post on social media or forums that you have made an application. All applications will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. The appointments will not be announced publicly until after the application deadline has passed and all formalities have been completed.

How to apply

Applicants should prepare a short CV and personal statement outlining why they believe they are suited for the role and any relevant skills or experience. This should be sent to volunteer@ukponycon.co.uk before 7pm on Friday the 27th December 2019. An acknowledgement email will be sent within two working days to confirm that we’ve received your application.

Relevant details of the application will be shared with the continuing committee members. In some cases, the committee may request further information from an applicant by email before making a decision on whether to make an offer. Final decisions will be sent out no later than Sunday 19th January 2020. Therefore, please ensure all email inboxes are monitored to allow for prompt replies.

What does UK PonyCon spend its money on?

We announced last month that UK PonyCon 2019 raised a record amount for charity, and that includes an amount as surplus from the convention budget. But where does the surplus come from?

Whilst it wouldn’t be appropriate to list all the details of what we spend our money on, we thought we would share a rough guide on how the UK PonyCon budget breaks down. Its an average cost of a few events just as an overall guide to the conventions finances.

We also thought it was a good time to remind everybody that the committee, and other volunteers, are not paid for running the convention. Please bare this in mind as whilst you are eager for details of UK PonyCon 2020, we have to organise this around our other commitments.

Hearth’s Warming competition now open!

Grab your paint brushes, steady your camera, or get ready to write! Our Hearth’s Warming Competition is starting again!

Britannia has been busy putting up her tree with her friends and now she needs your help spreading festive cheer!

To help her do this we would like you to create a creative piece Using the prompt “Britannia spreading Hearth’s Warming cheer!”. This can be done by one of three different ways!

  • Artwork (two categories: children up to the age of 12, and adults)
  • Photography
  • Writing a short fan fiction, drabble or poem (no more than 500 words)

This will be a “just for fun” competition, but each entry will be highlighted on our social media. We will endeavour to include the winners from each category will also be in our UK PonyCon 2020 con book, space permitting.

Entries open from today through to the 14th of December with the winners announced shortly after!
